Balancing Academics with Extracurriculars at an Engineering College

Engineering colleges, like my own IIIT Delhi, are known for their intense academic rigor. With demanding coursework and tight deadlines, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. That’s why extracurricular activities are not just a break from studies—they’re essential for maintaining mental clarity, building skills, and finding balance. In this blog, I’ll share why extracurriculars matter, highlight some activities you can explore, and give you a glimpse into my own journey managing academics and events at IIIT Delhi.

Why Extracurriculars Matter

Engineering studies can be mentally taxing, and focusing solely on academics can lead to stress, anxiety, or burnout. Extracurricular activities—whether sports, event organizing, or creative pursuits—refresh your mind and boost productivity. They also help you develop soft skills like teamwork, leadership, and time management, which are invaluable in your career. For me, stepping away from textbooks to play volleyball or organize a fest allows me to return to my studies with renewed focus and efficiency.

Extracurricular Ideas Beyond Sports and Socializing

While playing sports or hanging out with friends is great, there are many other ways to unwind and grow outside the classroom. Here are some ideas for engineering students:

  • Join a Club or Society: Most colleges have technical clubs (robotics, coding), cultural groups (music, dance, drama), or entrepreneurial societies. These are perfect for exploring passions or learning new skills.
  • Organize Events: Get involved in planning fests, hackathons, or workshops. It’s a great way to network, learn event management, and understand budgeting and teamwork.
  • Volunteering: Contribute to community service or campus initiatives, like sustainability drives or charity events, to give back and build empathy.
  • Creative Outlets: Try photography, writing, or graphic design. Many colleges have magazines or media clubs where you can showcase your work.
  • Fitness and Wellness: Beyond sports, activities like yoga, meditation, or gym sessions can improve physical and mental health.
  • Competitions: Participate in hackathons, case studies, or inter-college tournaments to challenge yourself and build your resume.

My Extracurricular Journey at IIIT Delhi

At IIIT Delhi, where academic pressure is intense, I’ve found balance by diving into extracurriculars. I play volleyball every evening as part of the college team and hit the gym for 1–1.5 hours each morning. These activities keep me physically active and mentally sharp. Beyond sports, I’m deeply involved in organizing events like our cultural fest Odyssey, technical fest Esya, research showcase Riise, and entrepreneurial summit E-Summit. I’ve also taken lead roles in induction programs for new BTech and MTech batches, which taught me how to manage large-scale events.

Outside college, I contribute to national and international events. For example, I served as an Accreditation Coordinator for the Kho Kho World Cup India 2025 in January and will be an IT Coordinator for the 17th Delhi State Rope Skipping Championship on August 18–19, 2025. These experiences have shown me the behind-the-scenes of event management—budgeting, artist coordination, and even navigating the politics of decision-making. Meeting new people, including celebrities and artists, is an added bonus!

Upcoming Events at IIIT Delhi

If you’re curious about what’s happening at IIIT Delhi, here’s a sneak peek at some upcoming events in the 2025 monsoon semester:

  • FITRUN (August 15, 2025): A 2-km campus marathon organized by the Sports Council, where I’ll be volunteering.
  • Esya: Our flagship technical fest, packed with coding competitions, hackathons, and tech showcases.
  • Riise and E-Summit: Events focused on research and entrepreneurship, perfect for networking and innovation.
  • Astra: Our sports fest, featuring intra-college tournaments and participation in IIT Guwahati’s sports fest later this month.
  • Odyssey (January 2026): Delhi’s biggest cultural fest, with performances, competitions, and star-studded events.

These events not only break the monotony of academics but also offer opportunities to learn, connect, and have fun.

The Bigger Picture

Engaging in extracurriculars isn’t just about taking a break—it’s about personal growth. You meet diverse people, develop leadership skills, and learn to handle high-pressure situations. However, balance is key. I focus on one task at a time—whether it’s studying, playing volleyball, or organizing an event—which brings efficiency and perfection to my work.

Constantly focusing on academics can lead to anxiety, demotivation, or self-doubt. Extracurriculars provide a healthy outlet to recharge and rediscover your passion. They remind you that engineering is not just about grades—it’s about building a well-rounded personality.
