A Day in the Life of an Engineering Student

Ever wondered how an engineering student juggles a whirlwind of classes, sports, and assignments without losing their sanity? As a third-year B.Tech student in Computer Science at IIIT Delhi, I’m here to share a glimpse into my hectic yet rewarding life as a hosteller. Living on campus means no commute, but it also means every minute is packed with opportunities to learn, grow, and occasionally sneak in some fun. Here’s how my typical day unfolds, along with a peek into my weekends and a lesson I’ve learned about making every moment count.

My Weekday Routine: A Balancing Act

My day starts early, between 6:00 and 6:30 AM, with a trip to the gym. A solid workout session helps me kickstart the day with energy and focus, and I’m usually done by 8:00 AM. After a quick breakfast in the mess, I get ready for the day and head to classes, which begin at 9:00 AM. Depending on the day, I’m in lectures or labs until 3:00 or 4:00 PM—sometimes even 5:00 or 6:00 PM. The academic rigor at IIIT Delhi keeps me on my toes, with courses demanding both focus and creativity.

As soon as classes wrap up, I rush to the volleyball court for practice. Being part of the college volleyball team is one of my proudest achievements, but it’s no small commitment. Practice runs from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM, pushing my stamina and teamwork skills to the limit. A memorable moment was during a recent match when a perfectly timed serve, powered by my trusty volleyball shoes, helped us clinch a set—it’s moments like these that make the sweat worthwhile.

After practice, I grab dinner and dive into self-study and assignments. This is when I tackle coding projects, review notes, or prepare for quizzes. By 12:00 AM or 1:00 AM, my brain and body are ready for a break, and I hit the bed, exhausted but fulfilled. This cycle repeats Monday through Friday, leaving me with a tired body but a sharper mind.

Weekends at IIIT Delhi: Study, Fun, and Reflection

Weekends are a different beast. Without classes, I have more flexibility, but the academic load doesn’t vanish. Most of my time is spent catching up on assignments, working on group projects, or preparing for upcoming quizzes. The academic intensity at IIIT Delhi is a notch above many other engineering colleges, so “free time” is often just study time in disguise.

For students from Delhi, weekends might mean a quick trip home to recharge with family. But for those of us from farther away, traveling isn’t practical for just two days. Instead, I use weekends to bond with friends over campus events, explore new coding side projects, or unwind with a movie night in the hostel. It’s a chance to recharge while still staying productive.

Making It Work: Discipline Becomes Habit

This schedule might sound overwhelming, but after more than a year, it’s become second nature. The key? Discipline. Sticking to this routine has taught me that consistency turns even the toughest schedules into habits. Whether it’s dragging myself to the gym at 6:00 AM or burning the midnight oil on a tough coding problem, I’ve learned that small, steady efforts add up. Last semester, for instance, my disciplined study routine helped me ace a particularly tricky algorithms course—a win that felt sweeter because of the grind.

One book that has helped me stay focused is The One Thing, which emphasizes the importance of prioritizing what matters most. My biggest takeaway? Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment to chase your goals. Start today, trust the process, and keep going, even when results seem small. Every step forward counts, and over time, you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come.
