A Day in the Life of an Engineering Student

Image
Ever wondered how an engineering student juggles a whirlwind of classes, sports, and assignments without losing their sanity? As a third-year B.Tech student in Computer Science at IIIT Delhi, I’m here to share a glimpse into my hectic yet rewarding life as a hosteller. Living on campus means no commute, but it also means every minute is packed with opportunities to learn, grow, and occasionally sneak in some fun. Here’s how my typical day unfolds, along with a peek into my weekends and a lesson I’ve learned about making every moment count. My Weekday Routine: A Balancing Act My day starts early, between 6:00 and 6:30 AM, with a trip to the gym. A solid workout session helps me kickstart the day with energy and focus, and I’m usually done by 8:00 AM. After a quick breakfast in the mess, I get ready for the day and head to classes, which begin at 9:00 AM. Depending on the day, I’m in lectures or labs until 3:00 or 4:00 PM—sometimes even 5:00 or 6:00 PM. The academic rigor at IIIT Delhi...

Exploring Molecular Dynamics: A Computer Science Guide to Tools and Workflow As a computer science student, I’m captivated by how computational tools power advancements in computational biology. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, which model the atomic-level motion of biomolecules like proteins and membranes, exemplify this synergy. For my recent project, I simulated a peptide-membrane system to analyze its structural behavior. My focus was on the computational pipeline: the tools and workflow driving Molecular Dynamics simulations. In this post, I’ll share my experience with four essential tools—CHARMM-GUI, GROMACS, VMD, and XmGrace—and how they form a robust pipeline. New to Molecular Dynamics? I recommend Understanding Molecular Simulations for a deeper dive ( learn more here ). 1. CHARMM-GUI: Building Peptide-Membrane Systems for Molecular Dynamics CHARMM-GUI’s Membrane Builder is a free, web-based tool that simplifies the creation of complex biomolecular systems for Mole...

An Average Student with Big Dreams I was never the topper in school. My days were filled with sports tournaments—zonal, interzonal. Studies? They took a backseat. Still, I managed an 85% in my 10th-grade exams, which felt like a small victory. After the 10th, I faced my first big decision: enroll in a polytechnic or switch to a better school for the 11th and 12th. I cleared both entrance exams, but friends and relatives nudged me toward school, saying, “Polytechnic has less value. You can do better with a non-medical stream.” The idea of enjoying two more years of school life sealed the deal.
